Breast cancer often shows no symptoms in its early stages. Changes in the breast can go unnoticed and may be mistaken for normal variations. This is why many individuals are unaware of the signs of breast cancer.

Detecting breast cancer early is crucial for improving recovery chances. Unfortunately, some symptoms are frequently overlooked. In this article, we will explore various signs that may be missed.

Commonly overlooked symptoms of breast cancer

Changes in skin texture

One of the early signs of breast cancer is a change in skin texture. The skin around the breast may become rough, reddened, or dimpled, resembling orange peel. This change is caused by blockages in the lymphatic vessels of the breast. Unfortunately, many people dismiss this as simple irritation or friction from clothing, but it could indicate the early development of breast cancer.

Inverted nipple

An inverted nipple can occur for various reasons. While finger retraction may be normal for some individuals, especially if it has been present since birth or develops with age, sudden changes can be concerning. If an inverted nipple is accompanied by pain or discomfort, it should be taken seriously and you should consult a doctor.

Nipple discharge

Fluid coming from the nipple without an obvious cause, aside from breastfeeding, can be a symptom of breast cancer. Although this discharge may result from other factors, such as infections or hormonal issues, it’s essential to stay vigilant and seek medical advice.

Pain in the breast or armpit

Pain or discomfort in the breast or armpit area can be an early sign of breast cancer. Many women believe that such pain only appears in advanced stages. However, this discomfort can arise in the early stages due to inflammation and pressure on nerves in these areas.

Changes in size or shape

Changes in the size or shape of the breast are often viewed as normal, particularly during the menstrual cycle. However, if one breast suddenly enlarges or shrinks without a clear reason, it’s crucial to be cautious and investigate the possibility of a mass or tumor inside the breast.

Redness or warmth

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer. Unlike most breast cancers that typically begin with a lump, IBC often presents symptoms such as inflammation and noticeable changes in the skin of the breast. When cancer cells block lymphatic vessels, the breast may appear swollen, red, and warm.

Many of these symptoms may be dismissed as normal bodily changes, but early detection is vital in managing breast cancer effectively.

Regularly perform breast self-examinations (SADARI) and consult a doctor if you notice any suspicious symptoms. You can also make use of the consultation features that are available in the Ai Care application by downloading the Ai Care application from the App Store or Play Store.
